China: In Search of the Giant Panda

May 5 - 18, 2012 (14 days)

Double occupancy: $5,990 per person
Single supplement: $1,000
HMNH Leader: Dr. Andrew Shedlock

The Giant Panda is a true icon for endangered wildlife, and today the future of this peaceful creature is particularly fragile. Its forest habitat in the mountainous areas of southwest China is fragmented, with poaching an ever-present threat. Join us for an expedition into Foping National Nature Reserve, at the heart of the panda’s natural habitat. Located on the south side of the Qinling Mountains, this reserve has the highest density of wild Giant Pandas ever recorded. Rather than visiting captive sanctuaries, spend a week tracking pandas in the wild, at a time of year when the pandas come down to lower elevations, making them easier to find. Also encounter other wildlife in the area, such as Golden Takin, Asiatic black bear, the elusive Golden snubnosed monkey and a wealth of birdlife. Wander the markets of Xi’an, visit the famed Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses Museum, and walk along some restored sections of the Great Wall.
