The Ancient Tea and Horse Caravan Road links the emerald teas of Yunnan and Sichuan to the arid landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau. Vital to trade in ancient times, this road passes through the Himalayas, and is considered the most daunting trade route in the world. Accompanied by explorer Jeff Fuchs, we willtravel to the booming trade towns of Jinghong, Dali, Shaxi, Lijiang, and Shangri-la to see the region for ourselves. Jeff, and a team of Tibetan mountain men led the first end-to-end journey along the 3,100 mile route, in an expedition that lasted 8 months. Jeff became the first westerner to trek the entire route, traveling through blizzards and mountain passes where GPS units and satellite phones were often of no use.

With Jeff as our guide, we will retrace parts of the road on a more moderate expedition through Yunnan. Follow the development of tea and tea culture, see diverse landscapes, and immerse in fascinating local communities where rich traditions have been largely unchanged over centuries. To round out our journey, we will also travel to Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai, where China’s classic imperial palaces and scenic gardens stand alongside emerging skyscrapers. Guests will explore the imperial capitals of Beijing and Xi'an, roaming the Forbidden City, the magnificent Great Wall at Mutianyu and enjoying special lower level access to the famed Terracotta Warriors Museum. Our journey ends in China’s bustling financial center of Shanghai – the “Paris of the East.
