Our journey takes us along sections of the Yellow River’s 3,400-mile stretch, a diverse landscape that ranges from remote and sacred Buddhist lands in Qinghai, to the provinces of Shaanxi and Henan, home to four of China’s ancient capitals, and finally to the bustling economic stronghold of Shandong Province. The Yellow River derives its name from dust originating in the Loess Plateau, which settles and accumulates on the riverbed, resulting in formidable “yellow floods.” The river, curving through regions intermittently touched by China’s economic boom, mirrors the country’s path to modernity.
