St. Petersburg: Russia's Cultural Capital

June 11 - 19, 2013 (9 Days)

Double occupancy: $5,490 per person
Single supplement: $1,295
HMNH Leaders: Prof. Nina Tumarkin and Prof. Harvey Cox

Visit beautiful St. Petersburg, Peter the Great's visionary city with its graceful bridges spanning the slow-moving waters of the Neva. Russia's second city is a cultural capital brimming with world-class museums, renowned theaters and gorgeous palaces. Learn about the city's momentous history through lectures and site visits. For example, a study of Russian Literature includes a walking tour of some of the sites described by Dostoevsky in his classic novels. A day dedicated to the beloved Russian dacha tradition includes a driving tour outside the city to a community of summer homes, many connected to famous writers, and concludes with a traditional Russian dinner with a local family in their private dacha. With themes such as "The Women's Age in Russia," "Peter the Great," "Russian Revolution and the Siege," and "Russian Ballet and Theatre," the lectures, delivered by museum curators and independent scholars residing in St. Petersburg, provide us with background on the people who spent their lives in this beautiful city during the three centuries of its existence. Optional post-extension to Moscow.
