We ring in the New Year in St. Petersburg, where the favorite holiday of the year features balls, soirées
and vecherinkas (evening parties) of all sorts and plenty of festivity. Not only will we experience
the cultural riches and festive brilliance of the two capitals of Russia, St. Petersburg and Moscow,
we will explore the underpinnings of Russian scientific research and inquiry. Peter the Great began
collecting items for his Kuntskamera (officially called "Peter the Great's Museum of Anthropology
and Ethnography") in 1704, a year after he started building St. Petersburg. Go behind the scenes to
meet a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences at St. Petersburg's Zoological Museum where we
can admire the nearly complete skeleton of the Berezovka Mammoth. Evening performances at some
of Russia's world-famous theaters are interspersed among visits to world-class museums, snow-dusted
churches, imperial estates and more.
Then, we head to the Golden Ring, one of the oldest Russian routes. Here, from the 31st of
December through the 10th of January, Russian Winter Festival events are held in many small towns
to celebrate the coming new year. Troika rides and other traditional folk customs are showcased
during this extended holiday period. Take a break from the hubbub of the cities and experience the
countryside, admire old churches made of white stone, hear the bells ringing, see old fortifications,
fortresses, and beautiful monasteries, and learn more about history of Russia.
