Located at an elevation of 5,000 feet, Oaxaca enjoys a warm, sunny climate year-round. The city of Oaxaca features noted museums and galleries, magnificent colonial churches, civic buildings, expansive parks, and charming cafés. The valley abounds in ancient archaeological sites, remnants of the early Zapotec and Mixtec peoples who inhabited this fertile region, and present-day villages that specialize in traditional arts and crafts. Visit artisans’ villages to meet local craftspeople in their home workshops, and explore the archaeological sites of Monte Albán and Mitla, repositories of ancient art. In Oaxaca, tour outstanding museums and participate in the city’s Day of the Dead celebration, a time when Mexican citizens throughout the country honor the souls of their departed relatives with elaborately decorated gravesites and festive offerings of sweets and flowers.
