Spitsbergen to Iceland:

Two ultimately remote northern lands reveal a world of abundant wildlife, marine life, and geologically amazing landscapes of black basaltic islands, dazzling glaciers, flowering tundra, volcanoes, and entrancing blue-green thermal springs. Explore Svalbard’s colorful mining town capital, Longyearbyen. Ny Alesund, the northernmost permanent settlement in the world, was the base from which explorer Amundsen set out for the North Pole. Cruise Spitsbergen’s hidden inlets, fjords, and rocky outcroppings—the habitats of profuse numbers of birds and marine life. We hope to witness
polar bears hunting along the pack ice, and view massive walrus hauled out by the hundreds on the gravel shores of protected bays. Our exploration of Iceland includes Grimsey Island, home to 36 species of seabirds; bizarre lava-flow labyrinths; tiny fishing villages; a crater lake that is home to huge numbers of whooper swans; and Europe’s largest glacier.

Iceland to Greenland:

Discover the secret splendors of mid-summer in the far north. Iceland’s volcaniclegacy reveals a geological wonderland of steaming fissures and fumaroles, chasms, lava flows, thermal pools of impossible blues, and the legendary 10,000 waterfalls. We visit colorful towns and villages, and witness the spectacle of Latrabjarg Cape—the westernmost region of Iceland and Europe’s largest bird cliff where millions of
guillemots nest. This region also gives an occasional glimpse of the largest mammal on earth, the blue whale. Greenland reveals gargantuan icebergs, twisting fjords, and fascinating cultural history. We visit colorful hamlets and Norse archaeological sites,
and, among flowering tundra and hidden coastal reaches, look for Arctic fox, polar bears, musk oxen, orca and pilot whales, and seals. The huge colonies of seabirds are a highlight—hundreds of thousands of puffins, kittiwakes, and murres, along with eider ducks, sea-eagles, and cormorants.
