The Harvard Museum of Natural History announces a new photographic exhibition, *[World in a Drop: Photographic Explorations of Microbial Life](https://hmnh.harvard.edu/world-drop-photographic-explorations-microbial-life)*, to open Saturday, August 26, 2017 and to extend through January 7, 2018.

The minuscule ecosystem within a single drop of water is home to an astonishing diversity of organisms busily living out their lives and interconnected by myriad complex relationships. The photographic exhibit *World in a Drop* is an aesthetic journey into this microbial world, as revealed through cutting-edge imaging technologies. With expertly executed photography, videography, and poetic narration, Scott Chimileski and Roberto Kolter capture the intrinsic beauty of a mysterious world that is seldom recognized.

Scott Chimileski is a microbiologist, photographer, and Research Fellow in the Department of Microbiology and Immunobiology at Harvard Medical School. Roberto Kolter is a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunobiology at the same school, where he has been a faculty member since 1983. Since 2003, Kolter has been the Co-Director of Harvard's university-wide Microbial Sciences Initiative. Chimileski and Kolter are co-authors of the 2017 book, *Life at the Edge of Sight: A Photographic Exploration of the Microbial World,* published by [Harvard University Press.](http://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674975910))

In conjunction with *World in a Drop: Photographic Explorations of Microbial Life*, the museum will offer a talk and book signing with both authors on Thursday, October 19 at 6:00 pm.

In this lecture, **Wonders of the Microbial World**, Chimileski and Kolter will share their appreciation and fascination with the microbial world they study, along with vignettes and images from their new book [*Life at the Edge of Sight*](http://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674975910)*.* The book is a stunning visual exploration of the inhabitants of an invisible world, from the pioneering findings of a seventeenth-century visionary to magnificent close-ups of the inner workings and cooperative communities of Earth’s most prolific organisms. The lecture and book signing are free and open to the public with free event parking at [52 Oxford Street Garage](http://map.harvard.edu/?ctrx=760081.5&ctry=2963729.5&level=9&layers=Campus%20Base%20and%20Buildings,Map%20Text).
