While Wikipedia is the fifth most popular website in the world, notching up more than 32 million views a day, less than 18.2% of its English-language biographies are about women. This number has increased by 2.7% in the past five years largely due to Wikipedia edit-a-thons -- events in which participants work together to create and edit Wikipedia pages for notable women. These efforts increase the number of women role models and help to combat systemic gender biases by making the achievements of women leaders more readily discoverable to the world.
Wikipedia editors Jess Wade and Maryam Zaringhalam will lead you through how to make your first edits. Then you will edit away with a community of fellow science enthusiasts at your own pace.
